5 Steps to Detox after the Holidays
Yes, it's that time of year again where we drink and eat everything in-sight. I get a lot of people reaching out to me this time of year for tips on how to get healthier and feel less shitty. Below, are five very simple steps you can do today to counter yourself from getting sick.
1) Drink plenty of water
It’s no secret that we need water to live and function properly. So it goes that a sufficient amount of water is essential for detox. (This is how we excrete many potentially harmful toxins etc.) Aim to drink 90 fl oz-130 fl oz. (it will vary on intake vs. excretion.)
2) Eat prebiotic foods
Prebiotic foods are a dietary fiber that is essential for beneficial bacteria within our guts (and throughout our bodies). These include root veggies (beets, carrots, yam, squash, etc.) asparagus, onions, apples, cabbage, artichoke, beans, and sweet potatoes.
3) Exercise rigorously
Countless studies have shown the positive effects of exercise on the physical and mental being. Look to do high-intensity, low-rest exercises. (Consider cardio in the morning) For example, I do 30 minutes of jump rope in the morning then a bodyweight routine.
4) Consume antioxidant-rich foods/drinks
These act as a sponge for free-radicals and other harmful chemicals within the body. Consider trying, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, green tea, garlic, cloves, black cherries, blueberries, strawberries, goji berries, sea buckthorn. (Also add in cruciferous veggies; cauliflower, broccoli, etc.)
5) Maintain sleep
Everything listed above enables a great night of sleep. It’s only at rest that the human body can actually clean-up/out all the crap in our bodies. A great book I'd recommend is Why We Sleep by Mathew Walker. (Click here for a link to a discussion on the importance of sleep on our bodies)
